Step One: Don't Drive The Truck Onto The Beach

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
Again, what were they thinking?

These guys got their truck stuck on the beach ... as the tide was coming in. This, of course, required a race with Mother Nature to save the truck.

I don't know the situation here, but I love the fact (in this speeded-up video) you can see people playing in the surf while the crew struggles to pull the truck out of the sand.

General Motors Wants WHAT For the Volt?

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
After all the hype and good PR swirling around the Chevrolet ("Don't call it 'Chevy'") Volt, the hammer came down this week: $41,000.

Now THAT'S a piece of information General Motors waited as long as possible to release, because I'm suffering from sticker shock.

Cattle Breaking Out On Freeways All Over

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
While I was on vacation, cows closed US-131 when a semi crashed on the freeway north of Grand Rapids and let them loose. Why does this happen when I am on vacation?

Michigan isn't the only place cows have very recently taken to the highways. In Chesterton, Ind., on I-94 east of Chicago, cattle closed the freeway when the truck carrying them crashed early Monday night. (Indiana State Police are quoted in reports as saying the driver of the semi was from Holland, Mich., and was talking on the CB when he crashed into the back of another truck.)

What the hell is going on?

This appears to be a coordinated cow-spiracy.

The Least Stolen Cars Are Pink

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
A recent post on the Freakonomics blog notes that pink cars are never stolen because they have low resale value. This comes from research out of the Netherlands (that's Holland for people who live outside of West Michigan and don't have to make the distinction between the Michigan city and the European country).

That tells me that top-selling Mary Kay reps can sleep well each night knowing their pink cars are unlikely to be absconded.

Setting Your Teen's Phone To Block Texts While Driving

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
The ban on texting while driving is in effect in Michigan, but we aired a report this morning from a Fox station in Ohio that indicates that there are people out there, mostly teens, who still think that texting while driving is perfectly safe. At the other end of the spectrum of opinion, the National Safety Council estimates that 1.2 million crashes each year are caused by cell phone use and texting while driving.

If you are willing pay for it, there is software for Android mobile phones that will disable your teen's phone (or anybody's) while driving. The software looks easy to install. Sadly, it is only available for Android phones, and the vast majority of phones out there are not Android.

The software comes from Textecution, and while the price is steep for this cheap driver ($29.99), you pay only once; it is not a subscription.

If the software company, Jonathan Young Enterprises, doesn't come up with a version for other phones, you can bet someone else will, and fast.

Time's 12 Most Important Cars of All Time

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
With any list, you risk being wildly wrong in your choices, and when you decide to prune the list of "important" cars of all time to just a dozen, well, you're just opening yourself up to criticism.

Car Tata Nano
My only criticism of this list from Time magazine is that the new car from India, the Tata Nano, is on the list. At $2,500, it is touted to be the least expensive car on the planet, and I have nothing to dispute that, but all the other cars on the list have historical reasons they are important, and the Nano has no history, period.

Be that as it may, Time's list is a great review of which vehicles were genuinely important and why.

   1. Model T Ford (1908-1927)
   2. Chrysler Airflow (1934-37)
   3. Volkswagen Beetle (1938-2003)
   4. The Ford 150 Pickup (1948-Present)
   5. Chevrolet (1955)
   6. Honda Civic (1972-present)
   7. Toyota Corolla (1966-present)
   8. British Motor Corporation Mini (1959-2000)
   9. Plymouth Voyager (1984-2000)
  10. The Sport Utility Vehicle (1990s-present)
  11. Toyota Prius (1997-present)
  12. Tata's Nano (2008)

Review and discuss.

MDOT's Holiday Gift: Construction Suspended

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
It has become policy now at the Michigan Department of Transportation to give drivers a holiday break: suspension of construction projects.
MDOT-logo
That doesn't mean all lane and road closures are canceled, and what's more important is that construction zone speed limits aren't suspended.

  • Projects that require daytime lane closures will be suspended this holiday weekend. That usually means full speed with all lanes.
  • Most work crews will have the holiday off. That means that in construction zones you can drive at 60mph instead of the required slowdown to 45mph when workers are present. But you can't drive 70 through construction zones.
Of course, all you who habitually tailgate, you are exempt from these rules.

At least, you think you are.

Instead of Blaming Other Drivers and Riders, Look Around

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
A ton of comments on the FOX 17 fan page on why motorcycle accidents like this one and this one happen.

07-01-10 Car v motorcycle28th Street just west of I-96, 7.1.10.

Christian Frank weighed in on what he does to be safe while he rides, and it was classic motorcycle safety protocol.
People want to blame riders for being crazy and drivers for being distracted, but try this experiment: the next time you are sitting at a light, watch the turning drivers' heads. You will see virtually none of them look in any direction but straight ahead, never side-to-side, looking for any traffic coming from some unforeseen direction.
THAT's the biggest problem. We do not look around.
