On Earth Day, I featured some photos and information about a prairie planting project I have been invovled with at Goodwillie Environmental School in Ada Township. We recently conducted the first controlled burn of the prairie area with the help of Paul Rogers and the Ada Township fire department. The burning will help to control invasive plant species while encouraging the development of the native grass and wildflower species that were planted a few years ago. The Wildflower Association of Michigan is an organization that promotes the preservation and restoration of Michigan's native plants and native plant communities. If you go to wildflowermich.org, you can learn much more about Michigan's native plants. If you are affiliated with a school or other organization that wishes to do or does outdoor education, you can click on the grants program to learn more about how to apply for grants to develop your own planting project.
